Vaton Design was founded by Gilles Vaton in 1979. The company started out with a focus on maxi monohull designs and had some success with racers; later on multihull design was added to the range.

Gilles Vaton designed several power cruising catamarans and two large sailing catamarans are currently [Feb 2008] under construction by Catana.

In 1984, Vaton Design's CHARLES HEIDSEICK IV foil-assisted maxi-trimaran (26 m / 85 ft 4 in) was built by Multiplast. It was capable of sailing at 28-30 knots, but unfortunately never competed in a race due to size restrictions imposed on boats at the time. The concept is still being explored with trifoilers aimed specifically at beating world speed records for sailing craft.

Gilles Vaton is also involved in another trifoiler project: BGV Innovation specializes in very large commercial power foiler-trimarans for passenger, freight, and military craft.
