Dick Vermeulen and his wife Lynn, are founders of the Maine Cat catamaran production company, and Dick is the designer of the line of Maine Cat cruising catamarans.
He got involved in building a sailing boat as a child and developed a passion for sailing during exploits afloat on Green Pond Lake, New Jersey.
A degree in mechanical engineering helped him realize the logical superiority of multihulls over monohulls: stability from form, not ballast, means a lighter, faster boat that has the added advantage of being able to sail up to the beach.
The Vermeulen's company produced boats from other designers, as well as custom craft, before turning to the serial manufacturing of Dick's own designs. The first was the Maine Cat 30, introduced in 1996. The models on the Maine Cat line are notable for their original design, sparkling performance and meticulous and skillful construction.
