In 1972, Gerard Danson sailed across the Pacific in a home-built plywood boat, an adventure that left him shipwrecked on the island of Mauritius. Inspired to design his own boats, he returned to France and teamed up with naval architect Daniel Caillou to build the first Outremer catamaran. In 1984, Danson went out on his own and founded the shipyard, Atelier Outremer.
Outremers are fast blue-water cruisers. Slender-hulled and light-weight, the boats are designed to have low wave drag. Rounded topsides and a relatively small bridgedeck cabin ensures low windage. Daggerboards increase hydrodynamic efficiency. Outremers have trademark sheerlines enhancing their pleasing and purposeful appearance.
Gerard Danson passed away in January 2005 at the young age of 57. He lost his battle against cancer.
