André Allègre is a multihull designer. His most famous achievements may be the PEN DUICK IV trimaran, which he designed for famous French racing sailor Eric Tabarly in 1968. With 20.80 m (68 ft), the PEN DUICK IV was the longest trimaran of her time and smashed several records for ocean crossings. In 1972, the aluminium, ketch-rigged trimaran won the OSTAR, skippered by Alain Colas. PEN DUICK IV is on Dick Newick's list of the six most influential trimaran designs.
In 1976, another Allègre design became the largest multihull of the time: GRAND LARGE. Built in plastic, 27.80 m (91 ft 2 in) long, and schooner rigged, she was longer than the WILLIAM SAURIN built for Eugene Riguidel five years later (27 m - 88 ft 7 in). GRAND LARGE was supposed to compete in the 1976 OSTAR but she was damaged during the first launch, and again later in the two-handed French Transat en Double (Lorient-Bermuda-Lorient).
André Allègre also designed the LAOGON trimaran.
