- Description:
The Telstar 28, introduced in January 2003 and dubbed the 'T2' by the creators, is the first Telstar built by Performance Cruising since 1981. This new trailerable sports cruiser targets the same market as the models of twenty and thirty years ago with a similar mix of features, but does it in an new design. The floats of the T2 fold in, not only for road transport but also for mooring where space is restricted or at a premium, as on a typical marina pontoon. Ingeniously, double-hinged beams swivel the amas alongside the main hull, reducing the beam from 16 ft (4.8 m) to 8 ft 6 in (2.6 m) without extending the boat's overall length. The mechanism is operated by pulling on a line. The floats retain the same wetted area retracted as they do extended, so no additional surfaces are exposed to fouling when the boat is berthed for long periods.
The T2 is beamier than the former Telstar models, can carry considerably more sail due to the so enhanced stability, and, due to the employment of advanced manufacturing materials and processes, is more weight-efficient. The result is that the T2 is a better performer which the designers say is adept at sailing around wind speed; they predict a top speed under sail of 20 knots. With a 9.9 HP outboard the boat will do 6 knots, this can be bumped up to 14 knots with the alternative 40 HP engine.
The main hull borrows from the Gemini 105Mc lines. A teardrop-shaped waterline, with a fine bow and maximum beam well aft, has a low wave drag for its 8:1 length-to-beam ratio. Flat sections aft with a 5 degree deadrise induce hydrodynamic lift under the hull as speeds increase. Vacuum infusion is used to manufacture the hulls with optimum glass-to-resin ratio and Kevlar is used in high stress areas. Both measures keep the displacement light, which is critical in encouraging multihulls to sail fast.
The saloon is light and airy and the design makes best use of the available volume to incorporate the necessary amenities for overnight cruising.
