Gypsy
Home-built from plans

- Woods
- Designed by:
- Lilian Woods, Woods Designs
- Description:
The Gypsy is a comfortable and safe budget offshore cruiser with standing cabin headroom and lively performance. She can have flat-bottomed dory-shaped hulls constructed in sheet plywood or fibreglass panels, or have round bilge hulls strip planked in cedar. The first option is cheaper and faster to build. For her length she has a surprising amount of accommodation. Each hull is in three compartments with standing headroom. There are single bunks or optional storage areas forward and aft, while the centre sections house the heads in one hull and a nav station in the other. An offset nacelle projets down from the level of the bridgedeck to provide standing headroom in the saloon, which houses a galley and dinette.
As in some other Woods designs, the hull cabins are not connected to the main cabin, so all three separate accomodation areas have their own companionway. This system gives easy and protected access forward as well as making the separate parts more private. Furthermore this system is easier to build.
The high freeboard of the hulls give the boat a chunky shape, but she is much more agile and speedy than she appears.
The Gypsy is a boat with good cruising potential that can be built on a very tight budget in a reasonable amount of time, and consequently it is a very popular home builders' choice.
