- Description:
The Dragonfly 25 MkI is a sport racer trimaran introduced in 1981, and the first in a new line of trimarans from Quorning Boats. Sailed by Eric Quorning, son of the designer, the DF 25 achieved wide recognition by winning the 1985 Round Britain and Ireland Race on corrected time.
Fixed aluminium beams support the floats and the narrow main hull is of fibreglass sandwich, making the boat very light and fast. Steering is very responsive and dinghy-like with rapid accelerations. The floats and beams are demountable for trailering.
Cabin accommodation is rather limited by the narrow beam and daggerboard box. Later Dragonflys are beamier and a have a centreboard rather than a daggerboard, which frees up interior space. A folding float system, too, was incorporated into subsequent models, which are much more versatile boats with wider market appeal.
Dragonfly 25s were built under licence in North America as well as at Quorning Boats in Denmark. Most of the North American models (about 80) were built at PC Mould, Ontario, Canada, where some evolution of the design took place. Among the developments at PC Mould is a 'Swing Wing' version of the DF 25.
