Converter 17
- Brand:
- Converter
- Designed by:

- Yard(s):
- Converter Yachts
- Description:
The Converter 17 consists of the main trimaran hull and a sliding beam system (which includes the nets). These components are to be used in conjunction with the hulls and rig of a 12 foot to 16 foot catamaran (which the owner purchases separately) to create a folding trimaran. This is a very cost effective way to own a trailerable trimaran.
Assembly: the cat hulls are unbolted from their cross beams and re-bolted onto the Converter's lateral beam. The stays from the cat are lengthened slightly using short lengths of spectra or other low-stretch rope. This is all very simple. Any beach catamaran can be used.
A boom tent can be used for camping-style day-sailing.
- Type:
- Day sailor
- Multihull type:
- Trimaran
- Construction:
- Solid fibreglass hulls and foam core deck made in female moulds.
- Sails and rigging:
Basic rig from a 12 to 16 foot "off-the-beach" cat and can be customised as the budget allows and as desire dictates.
Note: Values given below are for the smaller rig.
- Deck layout and gear:
- Mainsheet on a bridle system, jibsheets to adjustable blocks.
- Cockpit can comfortably seat 4 adults.
- Infill over cockpit well allows erection of 2 person tent in the cockpit.
- Storage hatches fore and aft.
- Keels, boards and rudders:
- Pivoting rudder. One of the catamaran rudders is used.
- Pivoting centreboard. The control line exit box is located well above the waterline, so no leaks or splashes enter the cockpit.
- Accommodation:
- 2 person tent in cockpit or boom tent that will cover the cockpit and the trampolines. The trampolines measure 1 m x 2.3 m (3 ft 3 in x 7 ft 7 in).
- A large storage compartment under the foredeck and smaller one under the rear deck provide plenty of dry storage for clothing, bedding, camping gear, etc.
- Systems - Power, Navigation:
- Mounting for an outboard (maximum 4 hp).
- Performance and handling:
A light, well balanced boat that is easy to trailer, rig, launch and sail either single handed or with the family. It can be sailed in very shallow water and can be readily beached.
The fine entry cuts through the chop while the ample buoyancy lifts the boat over the waves.
The performance is dependent on the hulls and rig used and anything from a cruiser to a racer can be created.
